The Hardware of High Performance

The Invisible Operating System

If we were to dissect your brain, where would we find your memories? Would someone looking at the brain be able to physically see a memory of you graduating from school? What about birthdays, or holidays with family?

Obviously the answer is no, right? Yet, our memories, our beliefs, and our self-image are all real. They are just not seen by the naked eye.

But why?

Because the brain and the mind are not the same thing. I'll explain more on this in a moment.

For now, what you need to remember is that every software needs hardware to run. If you want the software to function properly and deliver the best output, you have to maintain the hardware.

We are often more concerned with the software (skills) and neglect the fact that the hardware (the body) determines how well we can use those skills.

Let's take a look at how we do that.

Defining the Internal Hardware

As we just established, the mind and the brain are not one of the same. You can think of it this way, the mind is the software. The body is the hardware.

The mind holds all of the skills that help you build roadmaps, develop strategies, and creatively solve problems.

But what is internal hardware?

Great question!

Your internal hardware is all of the internal parts that help your software (mind) run at optimal levels. Your brain and nervous system help you process all of the data thrown at you in your business.

Here's a fun way to think about it. Let’s say you turn your laptop on and sit it down flat on the bed. What’s going to happen when you pick it up? It will feel hot, right?

What if you leave it sitting on the bed too long? It will get hot of course, but if left for an extended period of time it will overheat and shut down.

This is what happens to the mind when you are overextended. You see, the brain and nervous system are what's used to support and sustain a high-functioning mind.

Your skills (the software) can only perform as well as the machine (the brain and body) running them.
Your skills (the software) can only perform as well as the machine (the brain and body) running them.

When the body is in survival mode, a state of high-alert, the brain's processing power declines. High levels of innovative thinking fly out the door. Just like the overheated laptop on the bed, the mind starts to shut down. What we are describing here is that point in your day or week when you feel like any of the following:

🔹️Maxed out

🔹️Burnout

🔹️Unfocused

🔹️Just can't handle any more information

Now we understand how the mind and body are working together. So, how do we maintain the body to support the high performance of the mind?

Optimizing the Machine for Executive Bandwidth

We often wait until the weekend, or a big vacation as the time to mentally reset. Here's the truth no one told you about:

Through nervous system regulation protocols like breathwork, you can increase productivity while simultaneously reducing stress in as little as 5 minutes.

That's right. You don't even need to leave your desk. On those tough days when you:

🔹️Have last minute changes for a release

🔹️Work with a difficult client

🔹️Stare at spreadsheets until you go cross-eyed

Regulating your nervous system allows you to reclaim your competitive edge. You increase your executive bandwidth for the high-stakes decision-making your business needs to scale.

The result:

🔵 You feel better

🔵 Work more efficiently

🔵 Process data faster

🔵 Patiently respond vs react

🔵 Lead with a clear & calm mind

Scaling the Hardware: The High-Performing Team

When the leader in an organization optimizes their hardware (regulated nervous system) it sets the tone for the entire team. It both serves as motivation and a reminder for the team to stay on their A-game.

What about when an entire organization understands and masters this?

You see a massive spike in productivity, innovation, and a significant decline in mental fatigue. With the right protocols, a scaling business will reduce burnout and make being a high-performer the standard, not just a label for a select few.

The Bottom Line

Let’s do a quick recap. Your mind and all the skills it contains is the software and your body is the hardware. If you are scaling a business, or simply want to increase your personal output, then you have to give your body the maintenance it needs to sustain high-performance.
