Moving Beyond the Broken EAP Model

It's almost 2pm in the afternoon and that heavy lunch is catching up to you. You realize you're starting to feel a bit sluggish, so you decide to head into the break room and grab a cup of coffee.

You enter the room and see two employees, a man and woman, are already chatting at the machine. You politely hang back and wait for them to finish making their cups. As you do, you overhear some of their conversation.

“Did you check the site yet?” the woman asks.

“Yea, I did.” He quickly responds. “But honestly, I didn’t even know what to pick. I was overwhelmed just looking at the number of choices. How is it a wellness site, but it's making me feel more unwell?”

“I know, right?” They both laugh as she dumps another sugar packet in her cup. “But seriously,” she continues. “I didn't even know we had it until last month. Just keep looking and try not to be picky. You'll find the right provider.”

The Crisis of the “Break Glass” Model

The scenario depicted above highlights two big issues when it comes to EAPs. One is a lack of awareness of the program existing. Two is the difficulty in finding the right provider. Unfortunately, this is just scratching the surface.

In a world where the workforce is experiencing stress, burnout, and overwhelm at extremely high levels, employees need to be supported now more than ever. Sadly, research from Lyra Health shows EAP programs have ridiculously low utilization rates.

How low?

Less than 10%. That’s right. EAP utilization rates currently sit at about 5.5%. This means your organization is paying for a program that is going largely unused. More importantly, the employee is not receiving the support they need to improve their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. This is why many businesses have begun to replace and/or supplement their EAPs with additional wellness solutions.

Per an article from HR.com, nearly 79% of organizations offer EAP services. Yet, these programs are failing employees and there are a number of reasons for this. For starters, EAPs are simply cumbersome to use. When your employee is already stressed and in need of help, taking time to search through a catalog of providers can seem like a heavy burden.

Additionally, once the employee finds a provider, they may have to wait days, or possibly weeks before they can be seen and receive the care they need.

Lyra Health’s research found limited care options and poor quality care to be contributing factors to why EAPs are not improving employee well-being. Diversity also plays a role in usage. Employees are more likely to seek care and stick with treatment when they can find a provider of the same race or ethnicity as them.

Lastly, by the time an employee seeks help, it’s usually already too late. The organization’s bottom line has already been hit by low engagement, a decrease in productivity, increased absenteeism and presenteeism, and elevated healthcare costs. All of these are associated with high levels of stress and burnout. For mid-sized companies, the annual cost of burnout-related losses averages $5 million. This is a major reason why the employee assistance program model is broken. These programs provide a reactive solution to a problem that needs proactive strategies.

From Safety Net to High-Performance Fuel

The data has been pretty clear. When employees feel well, they perform well. Businesses in the United States have seen a 63% leap in financial growth as the result of implementing wellness programs.

Here’s the thing. It’s not enough to simply put a program in place and wait for magic to happen. Sorry. There’s no set it and forget it. Employees need help before they become overwhelmed and struggle with mental health issues.

Organizations have to incorporate programs that focus on proactive methods of care. This is what ensures companies are sustaining capacity during times of high-pressure. It also ensures employees are more resilient and mentally prepared to handle any challenges that come their way (regardless of whether those challenges are personal or professional). When you supply methods of care that proactively keep employees well, you do more than just provide a safety net during times of hardship. You strategically fuel the growth and performance of the company.

Real-Time Tools for the Flow of Work

In fast-paced environments, employees need real-time solutions that are fast, effective, and simple to do. Science-backed protocols help business leaders and corporate teams manage stress, prevent burnout, and improve overall well-being in as little as 5 minutes, without ever having to leave your desk.

This means:

📈 When your account executives are preparing for that big meeting with a prospective client, they know what techniques will put their mind and nerves at ease.

💻 When your software engineers finish spending hours debugging an error for a high-priority client, they can quickly relieve stress and continue supporting the ticket queue.

🗓 When your project managers are up late waiting for a code release and up early for a call with the team overseas, they know exactly which protocols will help them regain their mental focus to lead meetings with clarity.

Nervous system regulation is a life skill. It improves mental flexibility, balances mood and energy, and supports overall well-being. For teams, this can remove friction, enhance communication, and boost teamwork.
Nervous system regulation is a life skill. It improves mental flexibility, balances mood and energy, and supports overall well-being. For teams, this can remove friction, enhance communication, and boost teamwork.

This is achieved through nervous system regulation. What’s important to remember is that once you own these skills, they are with you for life. You'll forever have these skills at your disposal. Think of nervous system regulation techniques as tools in your mental well-being toolbox. You’ll have additional tools to help you and your team with things such as:

✅️ Falling asleep faster and with better quality - Improving how quickly one can trigger rest and relaxation increases productivity, enhances the ability to concentrate, improves mood, and lowers the risk of brain fog.

✅️ Reclaiming your mental energy - This revitalizes your mind to help you deliver optimal performance at work and provides you with the presence and patience needed for home life. This is important because a healthy home life and personal relationships all support mental and emotional well-being.

✅️ Driving down stress before, after, or during high-stakes moments - This drops cortisol levels, reduces blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease, and wards of mental health disorders such as depression.

✅️ Enhancing cognitive function - This gives you the ability to think clearly, process information faster, and creatively solve problems.

Nervous system regulation enables you to master your internal state. It allows teams to improve psychological flexibility, which according to the World Health Organization, is said to be rising as a top skill along with creativity and agility. This means that when you add the skill of nervous system regulation to your team, you can feel confident that your workforce is resilient and ready to deliver a steady stream of continuous, high-level output. This is the sustainable performance every team leader is looking for.
